Our meetings in universities are aimed at students and young people, offering them the chance to experience and explore Benedictine spirituality and wisdom, meet new people, build community, and develop their faith with the support and fellowship of other young Christians.

Taking the retreat experience to cities and universities where students live out busy lives, the meetings offer refreshment and a chance to reflect. Centred in prayer, the aim is to encourage young people to connect or reconnect with the source of life found in God, and to develop a daily relationship with Christ.

We encourage young adults to listen and respond to the central Gospel call to love and serve God and our neighbour, which is essential to our lives at every stage. The groups offer support to people in their daily faith, life choices, and the acting out of the Gospel in service to others.

University meetings are run by a ministry team made up from the young adult members of the Lay Community of St. Benedict. They are supported by the LCSB Outreach Worker and the LCSB Chaplain, who is a member of the Benedictine monastic community of Worth Abbey, West Sussex.

Northern Unis Meetings

What are Northern Unis Weekends?

Northern Unis Weekends are 24 hour retreats hosted by the Lay Community of St. Benedict. They aim to offer young people/students a chance to explore and deepen their faith through an experience of the contemplative spirituality of St. Benedict and to explore its relevance in our daily lives.

Held regularly throughout the academic year, the meetings move around between northern universities (currently alternating between Manchester and Leeds). They are open to people from across the region; we currently host people from Sheffield, Nottingham, Liverpool, Bradford and Hull Universities.

What Happens?

The meetings provide an opportunity to learn from the wisdom of the Benedictine Tradition by focusing on a particular theme, to explore contemplative forms of prayer, and to build community with other young people. Each weekend offers a timetabled programme of events including input from a monk from Worth Abbey, discussion groups, creative workshops, new ways of praying, including a taster of the monastic rhythm of prayer, celebrating Mass and cheesecake!

When’s the next one?

Check out the events page for more details.

To book or for more details contact the Administrator on 0845 4582994 or e-mail northernunis@laybenedictines.org.
